hurriance gustav

Everyone along the Alabama Gulf Coast is paying close attention to Hurricane Gustav. It looks like our area will dodge a direct hit. We will still have rough surf and high winds and heavy rain to deal with. But our thoughts now turn to our neighbors in Mississippi and Louisiana.

Alabama Sea Turtle Program

How about a family-friendly attraction that teaches about preservation, conservation and being a good steward of nature? Check out the Alabama Sea Turtle “Share the Beach” volunteer program. From May through October, Alabama's beaches are home to female turtles who make nests and lay eggs. Volunteers make sure the threatened and endangered species are able to nest safely. They patrol beaches looking for nests, share nest-watching duties, speak to groups about turtles and make sure that, when it is time, as many hatchlings as possible safely make the trek from the beach to the surf. While visiting, families can look for signs of nests. Back home, parents or grandparents can join the Adopt-A-Nest program so youngsters can track the progress of the nest and hatchlings they are helping support.

Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

OK, parents, listen up: Everyone needs a go-to plan, the sure-fire crowd-pleaser that is open virtually year-round. There are two places on the Alabama Gulf Coast that fit the bill: The beach, of course, and the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. Located in Gulf Shores, the zoo is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Visitors can explore the natural habitats of more than 400 animals, from alligators to wallabies. There also is petting zoo for some hands-on learning. Concessions are sold, and shaded picnic areas are available. It's an adventure every family can afford.

Beating the Heat on the Alabama Gulf Coast

Picture this: It's a sultry summer afternoon on the Alabama Gulf Coast. There seems not to be a breath of air stirring. What's the perfect antidote? Speed! Hop in a go-kart and get the wind whipping through your hair. Or, catch a ride on a fishing charter or sight-seeing cruise. A few laps around the track or an afternoon on the water is a sure way to beat the heat.

Multi-generational Travel to Alabama Gulf Coast

Last year, our family had a truly marvelous visit to the Alabama Gulf Coast. It was extra special because there were four generations of the family on the trip. With ages ranging from 10 to 77, there was some concern about finding activities everyone could and would enjoy. It was needless concern, however, because of the many and varied offerings in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and neighboring communities. One of the family favorites was Fort Morgan. The family elder enjoyed people- and wildlife-watching; the history buffs got to soak up some knowledge; and the youngster was captivated by the view of the structures waaaaaay out in the Gulf of Mexico. It was an all-around successful day!
